Doing repairs around Dr. Simons house, August 21st, 2008 PDF Print E-mail
August 21st, 2008

I awoke this morning to the sounds of Dr. Simon taking Dorothy to the airport.  She leaves for the states today so they got around early.  Today is the first day of CBS (Children’s Bible School) which is the equivalent of VBS in the states.  Allie is helping with them so they were scurrying around trying to get their materials together.  The flash disk Bernice was using seems to have crashed and the team is trying hard to compensate.  It is a bit rainy so I opted to take them to the church with my van.  I left the church to go to Nakumat to see if I could get some hardware to hang the towel racks and see about picking up a gas regulator to try to tune it down to work better with the stove here.  Seems the flames are very yellow which indicates a much too rich mixture.  The regulators were way too expensive to take a chance on destroying on so I will see what else I can do.  Nakumat had the concrete anchors needed to hang the towel racks but no masonry drill bits.  I ended up getting them from a hardware store made from a shipping container on a back street near the Nakumat.  After getting the things I went to PAC where I stayed when I first got here and paid my room rent for the first week here.  I then returned to get started on the projects here.
I tackled the towel racks first as they are pretty straight forward.  After installing them I began tackling the gas range. After looking around on the stove I discovered the information plate under the cook top.  It said the stove could be used with natural gas or LP and it was initially set up for natural gas.  Ahaa!!  This is the problem. The orifices on the stove were set way too large as natural gas needs a larger opening than LP.  About this time Allie called to ask me if I could come get them at the church and I left to pick them up.  When I got to the church they were in a meeting so Allie and I loaded the van.  By now my knee was beginning to let me know it is not 100% yet.  We returned to the house and I went online to find out how to make the change and returned to the stove.
The adjustment was so simple by tightening the orifice covers down to restrict them to the proper dimension.  The flames were now a nice blue but with yellow tips.  There may be some impurities in the gas here which would be no surprise. Hardly anything here is pure except for the dirt.  Well, maybe not even the dirt here in Nairobi with all the pollution.  Even the denatured alcohol (Methylated Spirits) has a good bit of water in it.  Anyhow with the stove taken care of it was a pretty uneventful day except that Dr. Simon had to take the car to the mechanic and Dorothy was back as she misread the ticket and reported a day early to get on the plane.  I helped peel potato’s for dinner along with Joyce and Dorothy who cooked.  After dinner Dr. Simon had a devotion time and we had prayer.  After that it was time for bed.  All in all, not a bad day but I wish I could have got more done.
