Easy Sunday in Mbita, August 10th, 2008 PDF Print E-mail
August 10th, 2008

After spending the night on my property on the lake I returned to ICIPE and found the door open for me.  No-one was up (or so I thought) so I went upstairs to check emails and write the blog entry for last night.  I then got showered and dressed for the day.  Allie came in and informed me everyone here was going to just do a small devotion and stay in from church. The past couple days had been hectic and Don and Nancy needed a rest.  After we all met and fellowshipped a while I went out and finished the net for the fish harvest at Rongo tomorrow and just hung out and relaxed.  I went back up to check some emails and when I laid back on the bed the next thing I remember is waking up!!  I had no idea I was so tired but I went out like a light.  Don actually said he came in to ask me a question but saw I was sleeping and he just slipped out.  I am not sure how long I was napping but, one thing for sure is, it felt good.  Nancy made a great corned beef sandwich for me with avocado and tomato on it so I had that for lunch.
Don thought it would be a good idea to go have some sodas and watch the Olympics at the cantina here at ICIPE so we took a walk there.  Watching the Olympics on Kenyan TV was a bit strange as the wind was blowing hard and the satellite dish kept getting off track.  The announces were very amateurish compared to what we are used to in the states.  There were several breaks for technical difficulties with the same commercials running what seemed into infinity.  We decided to come back to the masonette and get ready for dinner.  I had made bar-b-que sauce for the shredded beef  sandwiches for dinner and I must say it tasted pretty good.  It was made from tomato paste, vinegar, a little orange juice, honey, brown sugar and some spices we had in the cabinet.  Allie and Leah made homemade buns for the sandwiches,  potato salad, gravy and sakuma wiki which made a very nice dinner.  After dinner it was time to get things ready for our trip tomorrow.
We leave at 6AM so I don’t want to wait until the morning to get things around. I will have no problem making a early night of it since I did not really sleep all that well last night.  Tomorrow should be interesting as we are going to a village named Rongo.  I started giving them information a couple years ago and they have since began on the path of self sufficiency. They are doing brick making and aquaculture to provide for the orphans without any outside support.  I am looking forward to seeing their progress.  They are excited to show me what they are doing.  I have also heard there are some outlying communities that want to talk as well on how they can do the same thing.  It will be an interesting day I am sure.
