Barely getting around. July 28th, 2008 PDF Print E-mail
July 28th, 2008

I got up this morning with my shirt wet from sweating all night even with a fan on me. I forced myself out of bed to meet the fellows at the jobsite at 7:00AM as agreed.  On the way I picked up a few loaves of bread and Blueband (a local margarine) for the workers to eat for lunch as suggested by a friend.  I was really not feeling well at all and am still sweating but the cool morning air felt good.  I found the fellows on the way there and they all jumped into the van which weighted it down so much they had to get out for me to get down the trail (there is no road) closer to our property.  After getting them started I told them I was not feeling well and would come back later to check on their progress and get them paid.  On the way back I met the fellow I bought the land from coming down the trail.
He is a bitter old man that is quite greedy and dishonest.  We greeted and I told him I was not feeling well and had to go back to lie down.  This didn’t seem to matter to him in the least.  He has a problem with the 30 meter government setback from the lake shore and my legal right to use it.  Seems he thinks I should pay him for the use of land he simply does not own. He started getting huffy and I finally informed him again I was sick and not able to carry on this conversation.  Since he is blind I told him I was walking away.  He yelled “Are you simply leaving me this way?“  of which I replied “yes sir I am”.  I got in the van and left.  I later found out he tried to get his son to sell me the property to get a house built but his son refused saying it would be dishonest.  At the top of the trail I met Henry’s wife Mildred which is the polar opposite of Henry.  She informed me of some of his shady deals like trying to sell a property to two different men, etc.  I told her that her reward in heaven will be great to put up with such a one as Henry for so long.  She agreed and simply said pray for him.  She said it takes him a while to come around but the key is to take things a little bit at a time.  Hopefully I can learn this lesson on the negotiations on where the road easement is to be put for access to my property.  I was smart enough to get the attorney to write in the easement as part of the land deal so hopefully he will respect that.  It will not be without a fight though.
I then came back and went back to bed after checking in with Don and Nancy.  I slept until around noon and even though I was still feeling bad I had to do something (I’m a very bad patient) so I got up and went into town to exchange some bills for smaller denominations to pay the men, pick up a file (as requested by the workmen to sharpen their panga’s) and go by the land office to discuss the easement regulations.
When I got to see the land officer I told him I had a problem he could help me with and he asked what it was.  I said his name is Henry Okatch.  He said Henry had been in his office this past Friday and he had informed Henry that I had rightful use of the easement as long as I did not build a permanent structure on it.  I told him that was my understanding of the law as well.  He said it is the benefit of the land owner on the lake to have use of the property between his and the lake itself.  I then went to check in on the workmen with a stopover at a local shop to buy some sodas for the workers.
I went to he property to find they had almost cleared the entire fence line!! Wow, that was quick!!  I gave them the sodas and told them I would return to get them paid.  I then went to the base to check on things there.  I gave Allie and Leah a ride back with a stop off at the property to take care of getting the fellows paid and getting set up for the next days work which will be clearing the underbrush.  I also told them to take some of the wood for cooking fuel and leave some for Henry and Mildred to use at their home.  I collected the soda bottles, dropped them off at the shop where I purchased them and returned to the masonette and went back to bed.  After a bit I heard a knock on the door which was Nancy saying Don had got stranded as the Land cruiser he was borrowing to get around town would not start.  I gave her the keys to my van and the mechanic and Pastor Gombe took my van to get him jump started. I am still not feeling that well but better than yesterday and earlier today to be sure.  One good thing I did notice is the pain in my left knee has left.  Seems the bed rest has done it some good.  Still not interested in eating anything so I will pass on dinner. It’s not like I don’t have the reserves to handle a little fasting.
